City Council Special Meeting - Mar 24 2025

A Democratic Senator is delaying a vote on a measure that would end the government shutdown. Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley has been filibustering on the Senate floor since yesterday evening, warning about what he says is President Trump's attack on democracy. He's most likely delaying the inevitable, as the procedural vote on the GOP-backed funding proposal has already failed to pass 11 times.        NATO's chief is meeting with President Trump today in Washington, just after Trump canceled a second summit with Russia's leader. The meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte [[ RUH-tuh ]] was announced after a possible summit between Trump and Vladimir Putin was called off by Trump, who called it a "waste of time." Trump continues to press Putin to end the Russia-Ukraine war.        North Carolina has a new, Republican-backed congressional map. The GOP controls the state's legislature and today, the House passed the measure that would probably give Republicans an advantage in 11 out of 14 House seats from the state, up from the current ten. It's just the latest round in the redistricting battle involving several states.        President Trump's White House ballroom project will face a federal review. The administration says a body that oversees federal building construction will look at the plans. The announcement comes after demolition work for the 250-million-dollar project kicked off earlier this week. The President's renovations mark the first major changes to the historic property in decades.        One of the biggest dating apps on the planet is now requiring facial recognition. Tinder is announcing a first-of-its-kind facial verification feature that helps confirm users are real and match their profile photos. Match Group, which owns Tinder, says the policy will apply to all new users in the U.S.        Bon Jovi is going on tour. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will kick off the Forever Tour with four shows at New York's Madison Square Garden in July. The band has only played a handful of one-off concerts since 2022 as Jon Bon Jovi recovered from vocal chord surgery.
