City Council Special Meeting - Aug 26 2024

President Trump is being allowed to send National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The panel said in its 2-1 ruling on Monday that presidential determinations are not reviewable by federal courts. Meanwhile in the nation's capital, DC's attorney general says the National Guard could be deployed there until at least next summer and Trump is suggesting he might invoke the Insurrection Act to justify sending troops to San Francisco.        The government shutdown is now tied for the second-longest in the country's history. Another vote in the Senate failed to end the shutdown yesterday. No votes are scheduled for today but Senate Republicans will be having lunch at the White House where President Trump is expected to thank them for keeping a unified front.        A technical problem with a plane's communication system is believed to be the blame for an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles turning around. On Monday, a flight left Omaha, Nebraska but turned back after only 20 minutes in the air and landed safely. The FAA said the problem was in the plane's phone system.        Two more teens are being charged in connection with an attempted carjacking of a former DOGE staffer. Nineteen-year-old Laurence Cotton-Powell and 18-year-old Anthony Taylor are facing charges of robbery and assault for the attack on Edward Coristine also known as "Big Balls." The incident happened in early August and led into President Trump's crackdown on crime in the nation's capital.        Sean "Diddy" Combs may have his sentence commuted by President Trump as soon as this week. TMZ reports that Trump is mulling the decision, although White House staff are urging Trump not to. Diddy is serving a 50-month prison sentence on two interstate prostitution convictions.        Week Seven of the NFL season is in the books. Jahmyr Gibbs racked up 218 total yards as the Lions topped the banged up Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-9 in Detroit. In the other game last night, the Seahawks held off a late Houston rally and beat the Texans 27-19 in Seattle.
