Interim Report of the Providence County Grand Jury

On July 25, 2024, the Providence County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Jose Parra Reyes with one count of possession of more than one kilogram of fentanyl, one count of possession of more than one kilogram of heroin, one count of possession of more than one kilogram of cocaine, four counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, one count of possession of a stolen firearm, four counts of possession of a firearm with intent to deliver controlled substances, four counts of possession of a firearm while previously convicted of a crime of violence, and five counts of possessing a prohibited large capacity feeding device.

 

The alleged acts occurred in the City of Providence on January 30, 2024. The Providence Police Department conducted the investigation.

 

The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned on July 31, 2024, in Providence County Superior Court.

 

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals says President Trump can send National Guard troops to Portland. Under the ruling, the justices said presidential determinations are not reviewable by federal courts. The Court of Appeals lacks the power to issue injunctive relief. The City of Portland couldn't show an injury, since the troops hadn't been deployed.        President Trump says he thinks a trade deal can be reached with China. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping [[ she jeen-peeng ]] are set to meet later this month in South Korea. Monday at the White House, Trump again said the U.S. has been treated very unfairly by the Chinese when it comes to trade and tariffs.        The NBA regular season starts today. Kevin Durant dons Rocket red for the first time in a game of consequence when Houston tries to spoil the defending champion Thunder's banner-raising party in Oklahoma City. The nightcap features a Golden State showdown between Luka Doncic [[ DON-chitch ]] and the Lakers against Steph Curry's Warriors from Los Angeles.        Authorities says former NFL running back Doug Martin died in police custody. The Oakland Police Department said Monday the 36-year-old Martin was involved in a break-in at a home. They say he struggled with officers who were trying to detain him, and became unresponsive after being taken into custody.        A Rutgers University fraternity is under suspension after a hazing incident left one student in critical condition. The 19-year-old was found injured and unresponsive at Alpha Sigma Phi's off-campus house last Wednesday.        Food allergies in children are on the decline and it may be linked to different guidance on peanuts. In 2017, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases recommended parents introduce their babies to peanuts in an effort to significantly reduce their chances of being allergic based on a previous study. A new study in the journal Pediatrics finds there was a 43 percent drop-in peanut allergy rates in children under the age of three since that guidance has been issued.
