Mayor Beauchamp Appoints Five-Member Commission to Review Woonsocket Home Rule Charter

 

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Christopher Beauchamp announced today that he has appointed five residents to the Woonsocket Home Rule Charter Review Commission. Beauchamp expressed that local governments must adapt to changing times and public service needs. He indicated that though the City’s Charter has served Woonsocket well over the years, the time has come to convene a Charter Review Commission to evaluate the current Charter and remove/tighten-up problematic sections or add new sections to make the Charter more relevant and beneficial in the current era.

Carol Chattman

Thomas Gray

David Nabb

David Lahousse

Mayor Beauchamp stated, "I am pleased to appoint these five outstanding civic leaders to our Charter Review Commission. Each is uniquely qualified to have an impact on updating, streamlining, and strengthening our Charter to make city government more efficient and responsive to our residents."

The Mayor indicated that voter approval is required before any Charter Review Commission’s proposed changes become law and that public involvement is encouraged in the review process.

 

 

President Trump hosted Republican lawmakers at the White House in an apparent show of solidarity during the government shutdown. During a Rose Garden luncheon for GOP Senators, Trump said "radical" Democrats are holding the government hostage. Democratic lawmakers remain dug in on efforts to extend healthcare subsidies, while Republicans are demanding the government reopen before any negotiations take place.        The White House now says there no immediate plans for a meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump told reporters last week that he would meet with Putin in Hungary in the coming weeks to discuss the war between Russia and Ukraine. The White House also said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a "productive" call today.        Republicans in North Carolina have approved a new congressional map in order to pick up another House seat. It's the latest round in the redistricting battle involving several states. The GOP controls the state's legislature and today, the Senate passed the measure that would give Republicans an advantage in 11 out of 14 House seats from the state, up from the current ten.        An atmospheric river ramping up in the Pacific Northwest is likely to dump heavy rain and snow on the region. Forecasters say up to a foot of rain could fall in coastal areas along with several feet of snow at higher elevations. A level one out of four flash flood threat has been issued by NOAA's Weather Prediction Center for the Northern California coast, coastal Oregon and parts of western Washington for Friday and Saturday which are expected to be the heaviest days of rainfall.        French officials say the jewelry stolen from the Louvre Museum over the weekend is valued at more than 100-million dollars. Thieves broke into the museum Sunday morning, shortly before it opened to the public. They're thought to have gained entry through an upstairs window using some type of mechanical lift.        The NBA season tips off with a doubleheader tonight. The Oklahoma City Thunder will raise their championship banner as they host the Houston Rockets at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. In the night's second game, the Golden State Warriors will visit the Los Angeles Lakers at 10 p.m. Eastern.
