Forestdale School December Open House

 

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will hold a December Open House on Thursday, December 7 from 5-7 pm at the Forestdale School, 190 School Street.  Visitors can learn from volunteers about this 19th-century, one-room schoolhouse, view local artifacts, and purchase historically themed gift items that include puzzles, Christmas ornaments, books, throws, maps, 2024 calendars, and prints.   All items highlight the town’s heritage.   

 

Visitors can also subscribe to the free NSHA monthly Newsletter or join the Association and current members can renew dues.  

 

Persons who are unable to visit can shop online at www.nsheritageassn.org. All proceeds benefit local historic preservation activities.

Tensions are escalating in Minneapolis after an ICE agent shot and killed a woman during an enforcement operation. Federal officials say 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was killed after an agent fired what Homeland Security calls defensive shots, labeling her actions an act of domestic terrorism. Witnesses dispute that account, saying Good appeared to be driving away when the agent fired multiple times into her vehicle.        Venezuelan officials say a hundred people were killed during the U.S. raid Saturday that captured President Nicolas Maduro. A large number of the dead include Maduro's security team and some 32 members of the Cuban military and intelligence services working in the country.        Police are searching for suspects after a deadly shooting erupted outside an LDS church in Salt Lake City during a funeral. Two people were killed and six others were wounded when an argument in the church parking lot turned violent, with three victims now in critical condition. Authorities say the victims have not been identified, the motive remains unclear, and there's no sign the shooting targeted a religious group.        President Trump is pulling the U.S. out of dozens of international agreements, calling them a bad deal for the country. A new White House memo says the administration is withdrawing from 66 treaties and organizations, including the U.N. climate agreement. Trump argues the groups no longer serve U.S. interests and has ordered federal agencies to move quickly to finalize the exits.        OpenAI is rolling out a new health-focused version of ChatGPT as millions turn to the chatbot for medical questions. The company says ChatGPT Health will handle health conversations separately and won't use those questions to train its AI models. OpenAI says about 230 million people ask the chatbot health-related questions every week.        Texas A&M is ordering a philosophy professor to drop Plato from his classroom. The university told Professor Martin Peterson to remove the Greek philosopher and other readings from a course on contemporary moral issues, citing new Board of Regents policies limiting discussion of race, gender and sexual orientation. The decision is drawing criticism over academic freedom.
