City Council Regular Meeting - Nov 18 2024

Key races are being decided in today's elections across the country. Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani remains the front-runner in the polls to be New York City's next mayor. President Trump took the unusual step to endorse Mamdani's main rival, Independent and Trump-critic Andrew Cuomo last night.        Former Vice President Dick Cheney is being honored with flags at half staff at the White House. His family announced his passing today at the age of 84, saying in a statement that he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. The statement went on to pay tribute to Cheney as "a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing."        Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is warning there will be "mass chaos" for air travelers if the government shutdown drags on. He said that could include some of the country's airspace being closed. Travelers have faced flight delays and hours-long security lines as airports deal with staffing issues caused by the shutdown.        Stocks are closing lower on Wall Street. Tech shares led the sell-off as investors grow increasingly concerned about market valuations of AI-related stocks. At the closing bell, the Dow fell by 251 points to 47-085. The S&P 500 lost 80 points to 67-71. The Nasdaq dropped 486 points to 23-348.        Two Massachusetts men are facing charges in the weekend explosion at the Harvard Medical School. The U.S. Attorney's Office said this morning's arrests of 18-year-old Logan David Patterson and 20-year-old Dominick Frank Cardoza, were made by the FBI Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force and Harvard University police. Evidence of a small explosion in a wooden locker caused by what was believed to be a large commercial firework, was found around three a.m. Saturday on the fourth floor of the Goldenson Building.        The NFL's trade deadline has passed. Teams looked to make moves to either bolster their rosters for the playoff push or to trade away players as they look towards the future. In a blockbuster move, the New York Jets traded star cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for two first round picks.
