Welcome Blanket Founder Jayna Zweiman to speak at the Museum of Work & Culture

 

(WOONSOCKET, R.I.) – The Museum of Work & Culture, a division of the Rhode Island Historical Society, will host Jayna Zweiman for an artist talk on Tuesday, October, 22nd at 6:30pm, as part of its Welcome Blanket special exhibit programming. 

 

Zweiman will speak on her craftivist (craft + activist) artistic practice and discuss the origins and development of Welcome Blanket, a project that invites handcraft makers to create blankets and share stories important to them about immigration, migration, or relocation that become symbolic and practical gifts of welcome for new refugees coming to the United States. These gifts are collected, cataloged, and displayed at art institutions and exhibitions. Thanks to Zweiman’s help and support, the Museum of Work and Culture has collected over 330 blankets that will be gifted to refugees through Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island. These blankets will be displayed in the museum’s rotating gallery until November 30th.

 

Attendance for the talk is free, but registration is required. Tickets are available at rihs.simpletix.com. Light refreshments will be served. 

 

Zweiman is an architecturally-trained multidisciplinary designer and social entrepreneur. Her independent practice combines architecture, art, craft, and new media to focus on experiences that overlap physical, virtual, and conceptual spaces. Her work is about civic intimacy, accessibility, and joy. Zweiman has become a leading advocate of using design innovation to enact social change, perhaps most visibly with the pink hats worn by demonstrators during the 2017 Women’s March. Her innovations in craftivism have been rooted in design strategies to make spaces and systems for people to connect through craft.

 

Welcome Blanket is made possible with the support of Welcome Blanket and Jayna Zweiman, Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, the Blackstone Valley Piecemakers Quilting Guild, and the Blackstone Valley Quilting Company.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is urging state residents to remain peaceful during the current immigration raids. In a public address Wednesday night, Walz urged residents to record immigration raids on cellphones, and earlier in the day, state officials called for peacefulness after a man was shot in the leg by a federal agent.        President Trump is expected to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado at the White House this afternoon. After the U.S. arrested former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in a military operation, Trump said Machado didn't have "the support" to lead the country. Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, and has now pledged to share it with Trump.        The UN Security Council is expected to meet today to discuss the crisis unfolding in Iran. Multiple news reports say a briefing on the situation was requested by the United States. The meeting comes as over three-thousand protesters have reportedly died in Iran as authorities crack down on anti-government demonstrations.        A crew from the International Space Station has returned to Earth ahead of schedule because of a sick astronaut. NASA says the U.S.-Japanese-Russian crew from the SpaceX Crew-11 mission has splashed down safely off the coast of San Diego. They have not shared details about the sick crew member due to medical privacy.        One of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen is celebrating his birthday. Brigadier General Enoch "Woody" Woodhouse was part of a U.S. Fighter Group who were trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama and became the first Black aviators to serve during World War Two. On Wednesday, Woodhouse celebrated his 99th birthday.        Dodge has won Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show. The U.S. carmaker won for its Charger, while Ford won Truck of the Year for its Maverick Lobo. It's the sixth year in a row that Ford has come out on top. The Utility Vehicle of the Year was awarded to the Hyundai Palisade.
