Woonsocket Mayor Beauchamp Announces $3,500,000 Project to Begin

WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Mayor Christopher Beauchamp announced that a ceremonial ground-breaking ceremony for the Truman Drive Greenway Project will occur on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the SMILE artwork on Truman Drive.
A grant has been awarded by the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank for $2,000,000 to fund construction site preparation, landscape cap, streetlights, drainage and green infrastructure, removal and disposal of contaminated soil, pedestrian access, and road restoration. An additional grant of $500,000 has been awarded from the USEPA Southeast New England Program Stormwater Implementation Grants 2023 (SNEP SWIG23) and a $1,000,000 cash match from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.
Mayor Beauchamp thanked the funding partners for supporting this environmental project that will transform the Truman Bypass into a greenway that residents and visitors to the city will enjoy for generations.
The project's goal is to remove one and a half lanes to create a single lane north and southbound, respectively, while transforming the removed lane into a linear park and bike path to address environmental stormwater concerns, socioeconomic improvements, and generalized beautification of the city.
Manafort Construction, Inc. will begin the project on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Three lanes of traffic will be closed during the project, leaving one lane open to traffic, and a detour route will be in place on Main Street. Substantial project completion is expected to take sixty days with the road re-opening scheduled for November 1, 2024.
The Senate has once again rejected a measure to end the government shutdown. The Republican-backed measure failed to be passed for a ninth time on Wednesday. It came after President Trump said he will cut programs favored by Democrats, with a full list of targeted programs expected Friday. Democrats continue to prioritize healthcare, pushing for an extension of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.        President Trump says the FBI has made progress combating crime in U.S. cities. Alongside FBI Director Kash Patel at the White House, Trump said crushing violent crime is the top priority of the agency. Trump again blasted local Democrats in Chicago for resisting his efforts to deploy the National Guard, adding that he wants to "save" the Windy City.        A Supreme Court hearing today could have big implications for congressional maps across the U.S. Justices heard arguments over whether Louisiana's new House map violates the Constitution. The 2024 map created a second majority-Black congressional district after Black voters sued, arguing the old map violated the Voting Rights Act because they were being underrepresented. The state's attorney general says the part of the Voting Rights Act that prohibits racial discrimination in redistricting is unconstitutional.        The visas of at least six foreign citizens have been revoked after the Trump administration accused them of celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk. The conservative activist was assassinated while speaking at a college in Utah last month. The State Department said the U.S. has no obligation to host anyone who wishes death on Americans. It said it was working to identify other visas holders who celebrated Kirk's death.        Zohran Mamdani isn't giving President Trump credit for the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. In an interview with Fox News, the Democratic Socialist candidate for New York City mayor said he wants to see lasting peace before any credit is given. Mamdani again said if elected, he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he came to New York, based on a war crimes warrant from the International Criminal Court. Mamdani reiterated his number one issue if elected is making New York City affordable for working-class people.        The MLB Postseason continues tonight. The Mariners are hosting the Toronto Blue Jays in Seattle for game three of the American League Championship Series. Seattle holds a two games to none lead. In the NLCS, the Dodgers took a two-to-nothing series lead last night with the series now coming back to Los Angeles.
