Rep. Alzate celebrates the beginning of National Hispanic
Heritage Month 2021
STATE HOUSE – Chairwoman of the Rhode Island Black and Latino Legislative Caucus Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket) is celebrating the beginning of the 2021 National Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration began on September 15 and ends on October 15.
“As Latinos continue to be the fastest rising population in Rhode Island, this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month will not only be a joyous celebration of our cultures and triumphs, but it will also serve as a time when all Rhode Islanders can join their Latino friends and neighbors to learn about our history and what it’s like to be a Latino resident of Rhode Island. I encourage everyone to take part in the many events scheduled for the month and I am looking forward to the many days and nights of celebration and fun,” said Representative Alzate.
The inception of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration stems from the anniversaries of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration.
President Trump is set to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado today. Trump's relationship with Machado has become somewhat complicated since the U.S. arrested former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Trump said Machado "doesn't have the support within, or the respect within, the country," adding, "She's a very nice woman, but she doesn't have the respect."
