Let's learn about Diwali

Mrs. Pinky will teach us about Diwali celebrations. Diwali is the start of the Hindu New Year. Diwali is celebrated every year in autumn, usually falling between October and November. The festival lasts five days, with the main celebration occurring on the third day.

 

Mrs. Pinky will read from the book Lighting a Lamp: A Diwali Story by Jonny Zucker and will help participants make a craft to take home and enjoy.

Hurricane Melissa is taking aim at Jamaica after making landfall as a Category 5 storm. Life-threatening flooding, several feet of rain and landslides are all expected from Melissa as it crosses the western part of the island nation. It's currently packing top winds of 165 miles per hour, making Melissa one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic Basin.        A group of Democratic states and Washington, D.C. are taking legal action against the Trump administration as millions are set to lose food assistance on Saturday. This as the federal government shutdown stretches to the four-week mark. The Senate failed to pass a short-term spending bill for the 13th time today.        President Trump touted his administration's record military spending as he spoke to American troops today aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier in Yokosuka, Japan. Due to the current government shutdown, troops could end up going without pay by the middle of next month. Trump meanwhile, held talks with Japan's first female prime minister,on the second leg of his trip to Asia.        The Border Patrol official overseeing "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago is now required to meet with a judge every weekday until next Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commander Gregory Bovino agreed to meet daily to give her updates until a hearing takes place November 5th. Bovino is accused of violating a temporary restraining order against using tear gas against ICE protesters in Illinois.        Week ten of the college football season kicks off tonight with a pair of games. Kennesaw State will host UTEP at 8 p.m. eastern. Also at 8 p.m., Texas State will welcome in James Madison.        Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden will return to North America next summer. The band's Run For Your Lives Tour will start in Canada before heading to Harrison, New Jersey on September 5th. They'll also hit cities like Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles before wrapping up on September 29th in San Antonio. Iron Maiden will be joined by Megadeth on all dates as well as Anthrax at select shows. Ticket presales start today with shows going on general sale this Friday.
