NORTH SMITHFIELD WEEKLY UPDATE

Dear Residents, Businesses, and Community Partners,

I hope you are doing well. As we mark almost a year since the first case of COVID-19 in Rhode Island, I want to thank our first responders, town staff, teachers, and community partners for always stepping up to help those in need. We are also thankful for residents doing their part to keep cases low in our community. It has been a difficult year, but there is an end in sight. Until we are all vaccinated, please continue to remain vigilant and safe.

The Trump administration plans to use contingency funds to partially pay SNAP benefits as the federal government shutdown rolls on. In a court filing today, the administration said the money would cover "50-percent of eligible households' current allotments." This comes after two separate rulings last week ordered the Trump administration to tap emergency funds that will cover some of the SNAP program.        President Trump says New Yorkers "must vote for" Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race. Trump said in a post on Truth Social if Zohran Mamdani won, it would be "highly unlikely" he'd contribute federal funds beyond the minimum required. Trump went on to call Mamdani a "communist" who gives New York a zero chance of success.        A storm system moving up the East Coast is set to bring areas of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic rain to start the week. Impacts from the rain are expected to be minimal, but it could result in some travel delays around the I-95 corridor. The system will stay offshore as it brings rain from the Northeast down to North Carolina's Outer Banks.        Nancy Pelosi's time in office may be coming to an end. Several reports say Democratic leadership is signaling the ex-house speaker will not seek another term. She has been in politics for nearly four decades representing her San Francisco-based district.        Stocks are closing mixed to start the new month on Wall Street. Tech stocks provided some lift to the market with Amazon shares up four percent after the company reached a 38-billion-dollar deal with OpenAI. At the closing bell, the Dow fell 226 points to 47-336. The S&P 500 rose 11 points to 68-52. The Nasdaq gained 110 points to 23-834.        A major study out of Sweden shows that some hormonal contraceptives are linked to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. It involved two-million women and teenagers who were followed over several years and is the largest study of its kind. Researchers at Uppsala [[ up-SAH-luh ]] University found that some progestins, particularly desogestrel, pose an elevated breast cancer risk. T
