U.S. Small Business Administration Announces
2023 Small Business Award Winners In Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, RI– The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has announced the 2023 Small Business Week award winners in Rhode Island. The thirteen award-winning small businesses and advocates are headlined by this year’s Small Business Person of the Year, Craig Pickell, President & CEO of Lincoln-based Bullard Abrasives.

 

Mr. Pickell will be joined by the other awardees, a group that includes 2 New England regional winners, for the Rhode Island Salute to Small Business Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 3rd at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown.  Co-sponsored by the SBA and the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants, the awards ceremony will be the featured event in Rhode Island during National Small Business Week (April 30 – May 6, 2023).

 

“Over the past two years, America has had a record-breaking 10.5 million people apply to start businesses nationally and 332,000 across New England. I’m thrilled to recognize the strong, resilient, and innovative small business award winners leading the way from across Rhode Island,” said Mike Vlacich, SBA New England Regional Administrator. “Small businesses like these are the reason we are emerging from the pandemic stronger.  I congratulate them on their achievements and their role in creating jobs and powering our nation’s historic economic comeback. “

Hayward.  “I applaud our two regional winners, Wright’s Dairy Farm and The Backyard Food Company, for beating out some tough competition in their categories from the other New England states.  I am also elated that Craig will be representing the Ocean State for the national awards ceremony in Washington DC later this spring,” he added.

The Federal Reserve is cutting interest rates for a second straight meeting. The Fed lowered interest rates by a quarter percentage point today. The benchmark rate is now in a range of three-point-75-percent to four-percent.        A former Illinois police officer has been convicted of second degree murder in the death of Sonya Massey. Former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson shot and killed Massey in July of last year after she called 911 over a potential intruder at her Springfield home. The defense argued that Grayson was acting in self-defense because he believed Massey was going to throw a pot of boiling water at him.        More than two dozen people are dead in the Caribbean due to Hurricane Melissa. That's according to multiple reports. Melissa is bringing heavy winds and rain to The Bahamas through tonight, after slamming Cuba and Jamaica. Hurricane experts say it's the second-strongest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history. Melissa's winds have since died down to 90 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 storm.        The U.S. has finalized a trade deal with South Korea. That's according to a South Korean official following a meeting between President Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung today. The deal reportedly involves 200-billion-dollars in cash investments in the U.S. followed by 150-billion in cooperative shipbuilding led by South Korean companies.        There are still three lab monkeys on the loose after a truck from Tulane University carrying them crashed on a Southern Mississippi highway yesterday. The Jasper County Sheriff's Department said a number of the monkeys were "destroyed" after law enforcement was told they were dangerous. Police were initially told they were carrying hepatitis C, herpes and COVID, however Tulane has since said the animals weren't infectious.        Pivotal game five of the World Series is just hours away. The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Blue Jays one final time before the series shifts back to Toronto for game six. The series is tied at two games a piece after the Blue Jays took game four last night by a score of six to two.
