Rhode Islanders Reminded About Heat Precautions

 

In advance of the heat expected this weekend, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is reminding all Rhode Islanders about safety tips to keep themselves healthy and safe.

 

Normally, when you get hot, your body cools itself by sweating. But when it is very hot and humid, sweating isn’t enough, and your body temperature can rise very quickly. High temperatures can cause heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or heat cramps. Certain populations are at increased risk for heat-related illness during periods of extreme heat. These populations include babies and young children, older adults, and people who work outdoors.

 

When you are outside during extreme heat:

  • Stay out of the direct sun.
  • Try to stay in shaded areas.
  • Pace yourself when you exercise.
  • Schedule outdoor events early in the morning, when it is cooler and the air quality is better.
  • Wear light-colored and light-weight clothing.
  • Wear a hat with a brim and wear sunscreen for protection. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.

 

When you are inside during extreme heat:

  • Use air conditioning or fans, windows, and shades or curtains to keep your house cool.
  • Take cool showers or baths. Avoid cooking hot food indoors when the day is at its hottest.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Never leave a child, pet, or older adults in an unattended car during periods of extreme heat.

 

Watch for warning signs:

Check on friends, family, and neighbors during periods of extreme heat. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating; cold, pale, and clammy skin; nausea or vomiting, tiredness; dizziness; headache. If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cool place; put a cool, wet cloth on their body; have them sip water. Call medical help if symptoms get worse or last longer than one hour.

Senate Republicans are having lunch at the White House with President Trump as the government shutdown is in its third week. Trump is expected to thank them for keeping a unified front. There's no votes set for today after Senators failed to pass a spending measure for the eleventh time yesterday.        President Trump can deploy National Guard troops in Portland, Oregon. That's according to a ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The panel said in its 2-1 ruling on Monday that presidential determinations are not reviewable by federal courts.        Amazon Web Services says that it has resolved widespread internet outages that caused issues with multiple popular websites much of Monday. In an update issued Monday evening, the company confirmed that all AWS services had returned to normal. Earlier in the day, a surge in outage reports pointed to ongoing disruptions affecting a range of major online services, including Venmo, Microsoft Outlook, Zoom, Snapchat, and Lyft. Users also experienced issues with Amazon's own services, such as Alexa and Ring security cameras        Demolition efforts are underway on the East Wing of the White House. According to an administration official, crews started construction on the East Wing as part of President Trump's project to build a new ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the 250-million-dollar ballroom wouldn't 'interfere' with the existing White House structure, but later wrote on Truth Social that the East Wing would be "fully modernized as part of this process."        Alaska officials say evacuations are now complete for the communities of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok [[ kwee-gill-in-gawk ]] following devastating flooding caused by former Typhoon Halong. The Alaska Division of Homeland Security says crews are now working on evacuating residents from Nightmute and Tuntutuliak. So far, about 18-hundred Alaskans from 49 different communities have been forced from their homes after the remnants of Halong battered Western Alaska with heavy rains and major flooding on October 11th.        The Mega Millions jackpot is in record territory. Tuesday night's drawing is worth an estimated 650-million dollars with a cash option of just over 304-million. No one has won the jackpot prize in three-and-a-half months.
