The Blackstone Valley Amateur Radio Club will conduct an amateur radio demonstration Sat., Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bellingham Public Library, 100 Blackstone St.

The club will operate two radio stations outside the library as an introduction to ham radio.

An indoor display will feature the history of ham radio, its purpose, the benefits of the ham radio hobby and the public service hams render during national emergencies and natural disasters. Some vintage radio equipment will be displayed as well as a continuous Morse code demonstration.

Experienced hams will be present to welcome visitors, explain the day's proceedings and answer questions regarding their hobby.

 

The White House is escalating its rhetoric on Greenland, saying it's not taking military force off the table. Officials call control of the Arctic island a U.S. national security priority, citing its strategic value in deterring adversaries, while European leaders push back with a united statement supporting Greenland's sovereignty.        The U.S. is stepping up its support for Ukraine with new security guarantees announced at a major international summit in Paris. American officials say the U.S. will lead a truce-monitoring effort with European allies, using technology like drones and satellites but no U.S. troops. Leaders say the goal is to deter Russia and prevent future attacks as dozens of nations reaffirm their backing of Ukraine.        The Trump administration is tightening entry rules for foreign travelers, adding 25 more countries to a visa bond requirement. Starting January 21st, travelers from 38 nations -- including Venezuela, Cuba, Nigeria and Bangladesh -- may have to post bonds of up to 15-thousand dollars before entering the U.S., according to the State Department.        Minnesota's handling of alleged government fraud is headed to Capitol Hill today. Several state officials, including three Republican lawmakers, will testify before the House Oversight Committee, as its chairman also invites Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to appear later. It's an offer Walz says he's open to, while calling the hearings political "circus."        Pope Leo wrapped up the Catholic Church's Holy Year Tuesday with a message of compassion toward migrants and outsiders. The Jubilee drew a record 33-and-a-half million pilgrims to Rome, and the Pope said he hopes they leave with a renewed sense of dignity for others in a world driven by profit. He formally closed the Holy Door to end the celebration, marking the first time in more than 300 years that one pope opened it and another closed it.        American Airlines is rolling out free high-speed Wi-Fi on its flights starting this month. The perk will be available to AAdvantage members, with the airline saying it will offer connectivity on more planes than any other carrier. The phased rollout begins with all narrowbody and dual-class regional jets, with nearly every American flight expected to have free Wi-Fi by early spring.
