City Council Special Meeting - Sep 15 2022

Tuesday's off-year elections saw Democrats pick up wins in key races, and President Trump says he knows why. "TRUMP WASN'T ON THE BALLOT," the President posted in an all-caps Truth Social response. Democratic socialist won the race for mayor of New York City, and Democrats won the governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, while in California, voters passed Proposition 50 - the measure redrawing congressional maps to favor Democrats.        The Supreme Court is set to take up the legality of President Trump's tariffs. The high court scheduled oral arguments for today after it agreed to fast track the case. The tariffs will stay in place until the court makes a decision.        The federal government shutdown continues. It's now the longest in U.S. history. But 36 days in, some senators are hopeful it could end this week. If not, some of the country's airspace could be subject to closure soon. That's according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who's warning of "mass chaos" including flight delays and cancellations if the shutdown continues into next week.        Federal transportation investigators are in Louisville to search for the cause of a UPS jet crash at Louisville Muhammad Ali Airport that killed seven people yesterday. The crash sent a massive fireball into the air over the airport and smoke from the fire lingered for hours. Authorities say eleven people were taken to hospitals with injuries and two are in critical condition.        Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says the U.S. will not be sending troops into her country to take on drug cartels. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Sheinbaum said that she had rejected offers from President Trump and that the Mexican government doesn't agree with any U.S. military interference or interventionism. Her comments come after reports that the Trump administration was in the early planning stages of a mission to put U.S. troops and intelligence officers in Mexico.        Soccer legend David Beckham has been honored with a knighthood ceremony. The 50-year-old former England captain was knighted at Windsor Castle on Tuesday for his services to sports and charity.
