RIDOH and DEM Recommend Lifting Restrictions for Blue-green Algae in Spring Lake

 

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) recommend lifting the advisory restricting recreational activities at Spring Lake in Burrillville. (Spring Lake is also known as Herring Pond.) The advisory was related to high levels of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, and associated toxins.

 

Recent consecutive surveys by DEM and sample analysis conducted by RIDOH’s State Health Laboratories confirmed that blue-green algae has been at acceptably low levels and that cyanotoxins are not present in detectable concentrations. These findings meet state guidelines to support lifting the advisory. 

 

Blue-green algae conditions can change quickly, and it is possible that blooms may affect Spring Lake again, as well as other waterbodies in Rhode Island. The public should avoid contact with any body of water that is bright green or has a dense, floating algal mat on the water's surface. Blue-green algae blooms may look like green paint or thick pea soup. Toxins may persist in the water after a blue-green algae bloom is no longer visible.

President Trump says the framework of a future deal on Greenland has been formed. He made in the announcement about the deal framework in a post on Truth Social, but did not provide any further details. Trump has repeatedly said the U.S. needs to take control of Greenland for national security purposes. He said it came as a result of what he called a "very productive" meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte [[ roo-tuh ]].        Stocks are seeing a surge on Wall Street as a result of the news of a framework for a future deal on Greenland. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been up over 700 points. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have also been higher.        The eastern third of the country is set to get hit with dangerously cold subzero conditions this week. Strong gusty winds will lead to dangerous wind chills, prompting extreme cold warnings and watches for the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest. More severe weather will be on the way as a major winter storm is expected to be generated and impact a huge area from Texas to the East Coast from Friday and through the weekend.        A federal agent is injured after a vehicle pursuit led to shots being fired during an immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles. Officials say a man being pursued in a chase was a "criminal illegal alien" who "weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement." The DHS said agents opened fire in self-defense. No one was struck by gunfire, but an agent was injured in some other way.        ICE is launching its latest operation in Maine. According to Fox News, authorities arrested more than 50 people on Tuesday and more arrests were taking place on Wednesday. ICE Deputy Assistant Director Patricia Hyde said there are "approximately 14-hundred targets" in Maine, and it comes as part of the Trump administration's broader crackdown against illegal immigrants.        The federal trial of former Los Angeles Dodgers' outfielder Yasiel [[ YAH-see-el ]] Puig [[ PWEEG ]] is underway. A panel of 12 jurors and two alternates was selected on Tuesday. Puig is accused of lying to federal investigators about his suspected involvement in an illegal sports betting operation.
