Rep. Alzate and RI Legislative Black and Latino Caucus thank Dr. Alexander-Scott for her service to RI

 

STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus, chaired by Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket), is releasing the following statement thanking Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott for her service to the residents of Rhode Island.

 

“The Black and Latino Caucus extends to Dr. Alexander-Scott our deepest thanks and gratitude for her commitment to the public health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders.  In particular, we thank her for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and how she strived to ensure that Rhode Island’s most marginalized and affected communities received the care and attention that they deserved,” said Chairwoman Alzate and the Caucus.

 

The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus (RILBLC) represents and advocates for the interests of disadvantaged people throughout the State of Rhode Island. It seeks to increase a diverse participation and representation in all levels of government. The goal is to close, and ultimately to eliminate, disparities that still exist between white and non-white Americans in every aspect of life.

 

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has gifted her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump. The two met at the White House on Thursday, and afterward, Machado told reporters she presented the medal to Trump in appreciation for deposing Venezuela's former leader Nicolas Maduro. Trump later took to social media to thank her, calling the move "a wonderful gesture of mutual respect."        Protesters spent much of Thursday facing off against law enforcement at a federal building in the Minneapolis area. Protests have continued in the city since the deadly shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent last week, and were spurred on by another ICE-involved shooting Wednesday night.        Verizon customers will receive a 20-dollar credit after Wednesday's nearly day-long outage. In a statement posted on social media Thursday, Verizon said it did not meet the standard of excellence customers expect.        The mother of one of Elon Musk's children is suing his xAI artificial intelligence company over its AI tool Grok for allegedly creating deepfake sexually explicit photos of her. Ashley St. Clair's suit is the latest complaint against the company after weeks of outrage over Grok being used to create nonconsensual explicit photos of numerous people, including children.        Mortgage rates are at their lowest level since 2022. According to Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey, the benchmark rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped this week by a tenth of a percent to six-point-oh-six percent. The agency's chief economist said weekly purchase applications and refinancing activity has jumped.        A rare disease spread by rats has been detected at a homeless camp in Northern California. Health officials in Berkeley say leptospirosis has been found in numerous rats and dogs at homeless encampments in the west part of the city. Without treatment, it could lead to kidney damage and liver failure but as a city health alert notes, it is not spread through the air.
