Rep. Tobon requests his name be removed from vaccine mandate letter to governor

 

STATE HOUSE – Rep. Carlos E. Tobon (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket) is requesting that his name be removed from a recent letter to Governor McKee regarding the executive order mandating that healthcare workers receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“While I was vaccinated as soon as possible, I understand the fear and trepidation that some of my constituents felt concerning this new vaccine.  Whether these apprehensions were rooted in fact or not, the anxiety felt by these individuals is very real, which is why I signed on to the letter. 

“But, after more consideration and conversations with those I represent in District 58, I realized there is a significant difference in regards to public health when comparing the risks of an unvaccinated worker in most professions to that of medical professionals who provide care for all of our residents. Individuals who care for patients of COVID-19 and numerous other health issues must protect themselves and their patients, and the only way to do this is through vaccination.  It is for this reason that I am requesting my name be removed from the letter sent to Governor McKee,” said Representative Tobon.

“Frontline workers were the heroes who took care of us and our loved ones in the dark, frightful and uncertain days of the pandemic,” he added.  “The numbers of those with COVID-19 have drastically dropped due to the vaccines they are now administering, and I encourage them to vaccinate themselves as well.”

The Department of Homeland Security says a vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon Thursday resulted in a shooting after the driver "weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents." DHS said in a post on X that U.S. Border Patrol agents believed the passenger was a "Venezuelan illegal alien" affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang who was also involved in a recent shooting in Portland. DHS claims the driver attempted to run the officers over, leading to an agent firing a defensive shot.        The FBI has taken sole control over the investigation into the deadly shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minnesota yesterday. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it was notified that it "would no longer have access to the case material, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation." After the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the woman refused commands to get out of her vehicle, and tried to harm the officer with the car.        A manhunt is underway for the person, or persons, who killed two people and injured six others outside a church in Utah. Police say a funeral was taking place at an LDS church in Salt Lake City Wednesday when an altercation broke out in the parking lot and shots were fired at a group of people. Of those injured, three are in critical condition. The names of the victims and a motive for the shooting have not been released.        Proceedings have resumed in Corpus Christi at the trial of former Uvalde ISD police officer Adrian Gonzales, but some testimony has been thrown out. Yesterday the judge denied a defense motion for a mistrial over the testimony of Stephanie Hall, a teacher at the school on the day of the attack. The defense contended her testimony on Tuesday was different from previous statements that had been given to them by the prosecution.        The House is passing legislation to extend expired ObamaCare tax credits. The bipartisan vote passed 230 to 196, with 17 Republicans crossing the aisle to join every voting Democrat in support. The move, which would extend the COVID-enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, will now head to the Senate.        Today marks the 15th anniversary of the deadly Southern Arizona shooting at an event hosted by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. On January 8th, 2011, a gunman opened fire at a Tucson grocery store were the event was being held. Six people were killed, including a nine-year-old girl, and over a dozen were wounded.
