Market Square Food Truck Night Returns to Woonsocket 7/7 Complete with Bar, Live Entertainment, and Creative Placemaking

WOONSOCKET, RI, JULY 5, 2017 – Market Square Food Truck Night returns bigger and better than ever on Friday, July 7, 2017, 5pm – 8pm. After much discussion by the community, city council, event organizers, and business owners, the highly successful Market Square Food Truck Night is scheduled to return to 40 South Main Street, Woonsocket. The family-friendly event is FREE to attend and offers food options ranging from $3-$15. This is the third in a series of four scheduled food truck nights culminating on Friday, August 4th

Attendees at the July 7th event will be able to select their meal of choice from one of the following trucks:

  • FindCafeina
  • Championship Melt
  • Friskie Fries
  • Gastors401
  • GottaQ
  • SmokeHouse BBQ
  • Jeff’s Wood Fired Pizza
  • SoulFull
  • The Big Freezy
  • Ocean Spray Food Truck

Ciro’s Tavern, equipped with a shiny new Class P permit, will be back serving everyone’s favorite local beverages including Ravenous Beer and Wine from Gooseneck Vineyards (in addition to products from event sponsors McLaughlin & Moran, Inc.).

With a live entertainment license approved by the City Council at the June 19th meeting, attendees can grove to the beat of Rhode Island’s own Red Pennys. According to the band’s website (theredpennys.com) “the Red Pennys blend a mix of old country, honky tonk and roadhouse rhythm and riffs to form a sound that makes dancing and foot stomping possible” for everyone. The group is comprised of “Gregg Figliozzi guitar and vocals; Bob Mac upright bass and hand-shakin' duties; Russ Dawley drums, vocals and crazy gadgets and Miss Helen Sheldon vocals, bells and boots.”

As always, the event will include games and activities for everyone, from artistically designed Jenga and Corn Hole, to face painting provided by Water’s Church. A polaroid station has been added to this event, so be sure to show up photo-ready. Besides these old standbys, attendees at the July 7th event will be integrated into Creative Placemaking project, designed to get community feedback on future permanent fixtures in the District.

In addition to Food Trucks, Friday night attendees will be greeted by a temporary awning over the patio and a cardboard bread oven representing the new French Canadian Bread Oven that will soon don the patio (generously funded by the RI Foundation). Balloons and planters will indicate future potential locations of fences and flowerbeds. Artist Bonnie Lee Turner was recently funded a $500 grant to design a new sculpture for the region. With YES as the theme, she will be present to seek insights from the community on a temporary mock-up. Furthermore, attention will be drawn to the historic millrace behind the old Mulvey building through light and balloons.

Attendees are encouraged to engage with the temporary installations, move them around, and see how they like them best. Their feedback will inform the style and placement of future permanent installations. Summer AmeriCorps VISTA members from NeighborWorks America will be present throughout the evening, dressed in blue staff shirts, available to hear and record feedback.

This community-informed design process is facilitated by Architect Kathy Dorgan and her intern Karen Sofia Mata Ortas from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Together they are developing a cohesive design for the region, aimed at linking 40 S. Main St. to the other properties NWBRV owns at 15 Island Place, and 68 S. Main Street. Kathy shares “we’re looking for creative people to help us brainstorm ways to shape an exciting place for people to come together in Woonsocket.”

We at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley see this event with all of its components as a chance for people to come together and enjoy the fun and beauty that Woonsocket has to offer. On July 7th the Woonsocket Department of Parks and Recreation will also be showing a movie in River Island Park. Throughout the evening we’ll use creative approaches (such as bubbles and balloons) to encourage attendees to head over to the park to check out the film and continue to spend time in downtown Woonsocket.

Market Square Food Truck Nights are made possible by the vision and support of Food Trucks In, a RI-based organization led by Eric Weiner with a national scope. With a mission of “helping food trucks and foodies connect at the intersection of small business, logistics, and great food!” Eric works to connect great people through great food through the power of social media. Eric is passionate about food, but he also is excited to offer communities opportunities to come together.

Food Trucks In collaborates to rotate over 45 trucks to communities all throughout the state so that residents everywhere have the opportunity to taste the authentic Chinese street food offered by Buddha Belly, the grilled goodness of Champion Melt, and the sweet and savory surprise that is O’Crepe.

This art’s-based event is made possible through the generous contribution of LISC Rhode Island and the Kresge Foundation. Artists, including musicians and performers, interested in collaborating on future events should reach out to Meghan Rego (This email address is being protected from spambots. House Speaker Mike Johnson is unveiling a plan for foreign aid, calling for four separate bills with funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other priorities. Johnson explained his plan after a closed-door GOP conference meeting Monday after months of delay. Each bill would be voted on separately before the end of the week, Johnson said.        The House is expected to send articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate today. The move will force the Democratic-led Senate to take up the matter of impeachment against Mayorkas. Republicans in the House impeached Mayorkas in February over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.       Jury selection will continue today in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial. More than 50 potential jurors were dismissed Monday after saying they could not be fair and impartial. Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.       Severe thunderstorms will continue to make their way across the midwest today. An area from Rochester, Minnesota to Little Rock, Arkansas is expected to be affected by the powerful storms. Hail, damaging wind gusts and even a few tornadoes are possible in some areas.        According to ESPN, USA Basketball is finalizing its 2024 Paris Olympics roster. The roster includes Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Lakers forwards LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Suns forward Kevin Durant, Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, and Sixers center Joel Embiid.        NASA is confirming that an object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month came from the International Space Station. Part of a cargo pallet loaded with 58-hundred pound of old batteries hit the Naples home March 8th. The pallet was expected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere and now scientists are looking to find out why their calculations were wrong.
