City Council Special Meeting - Mar 03 2021

Voters are headed to the polls across the country today for election day. In New York City's race for mayor, Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani maintains his commanding lead in the polls over Independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The polls have tightened in the race to be New Jersey's next governor, with Democrat Mikie Sherrill's lead over Republican Jack Ciattarelli [[ CHIT-ah-relly ]] narrowing. The same cannot be said for Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger has maintained a double-digit lead over Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears in that race for governor.        Former President George W. Bush says the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney is a loss to the nation. In a statement, Bush said he will always remember Cheney for being a decent, honorable man. Cheney served as VP for two terms under Bush.        The Senate is set to vote for a 14th time to end the government shutdown soon. Today is Day 35 of the shutdown, tying the record for the longest shut down in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he's optimistic that lawmakers will find a solution this week.        The Supreme Court will take up the legality of President Trump's tariffs tomorrow. The high court scheduled oral arguments for November 5th after it agreed to fast track the case. The tariffs will stay in place until the court makes a decision.        The richest Americans have been seeing their wealth grow by leaps and bounds. The nation's top ten billionaires have collectively added nearly 700-billion-dollars to their fortunes in the past year, driving their overall worth to two-and-a-half trillion dollars. That's according to a new report from the non-profit Oxfam America published on Monday.        People magazine's 2025 Sexiest Man Alive is "Wicked" and "Bridgerton" star Jonathan Bailey. The announcement was made Monday night on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," with the 37-year-old British actor calling it the honor of a lifetime. He's the first openly gay man ever to hold the title of People's Sexiest Man.
