City Council Regular Meeting - Mar 01 2021

It's now day 16 of the federal government shutdown. The Senate will vote again today on a spending measure to bring the shutdown to an end. It'll be the tenth time lawmakers have attempt to pass the legislation that's Republican-backed and has already made it through the House.        The Trump administration's layoffs of federal workers during the shutdown are being blocked by a federal judge in San Francisco. Unions asked the federal court to block the move, calling the firings illegal. Susan Illston, a President Clinton-appointed judge, called the layoffs "politically motivated."        The Great Plains will be under the threat of severe weather starting today. Areas of Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas may see thunderstorms that could bring heavy winds and hail. The storm system will then shift east and tomorrow, strong thunderstorms may be seen from Oklahoma to Missouri.        The evacuation of hundreds in Alaska are underway after severe weather struck the western coast of the state. Typhoon Halong's aftermath brought extreme winds that took down houses and storm surge that caused devastating flooding. One person died and two people have yet to be found in now what has shifted to a recovery mission.        A Young Republican group chat that contained controversial text messages is being dismissed by Vice President JD Vance. The report released Tuesday said the young GOP leaders made thousands of messages with racist, sexist and violent language, including praise for Adolf Hitler. On Wednesday, Vance said "kids do stupid things" and telling an offensive joke shouldn't ruin their lives.        "The Black Phone 2" looks to frighten up millions at the box office this weekend. The sequel starring Ethan Hawke as a serial killer called the Grabber is looking to make 23 to 29-million-dollars in its debut weekend. The first "Black Phone" debuted with 23-million in 2021.
