Sen. Archambault Condemns Racist Graffiti in Smithfield

 

STATE HOUSE — Sen. Stephen R. Archambault (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston) issued a statement today condemning racist graffiti that was discovered on part of a Route 116 bridge that spans the Woonasquatucket River.

“It’s extremely upsetting and offensive to see this type of hatred in a town that prides itself on being welcoming and inclusive,” said Senator Archambault. “This type of behavior is not to be tolerated in any way and is certainly not indicative of the people of Smithfield, who I am sure join me in condemning the graffiti. It’s certainly heart-wrenching that it comes on the heels of a call for national unity from our new president. But it’s a stark reminder that hate still exists in the most unlikely places and we must stay vigilant in combating it with zero tolerance.”

The graffiti has been painted over by town highway crews, but Senator Archambault urges other officials to use the incident as an opportunity to speak out against hatred and intolerance.

 

The Pentagon is reportedly ready to deploy about 15-hundred active duty troops to Minnesota. Multiple sources cite defense officials saying the soldiers would be sent to Minneapolis if President Trump invokes the Insurrection Act. Anti-ICE protests have been escalating in Minneapolis since last week's fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vowed he would not to be intimidated during Sunday talk shows.        President Trump says Denmark has failed to address what he says is the Russian threat to Greenland. The President has been pushing for U.S. ownership of the autonomous Danish territory, which has voiced staunch opposition to any U.S. takeover. Trump over the weekend announced new tariffs against European countries that oppose his arctic plans.        Kentucky Senator Rand Paul says the U.S. is in an "ongoing war" with Venezuela. Paul made the comments on NBC News' Meet The Press Sunday, saying it was an ongoing war to take their oil and distribute it. He added that the U.S. still has "hundreds of ships with a 100 percent blockade of the coast."        Union officials say at least one death is now being attributed to the New York City nurses' strike. It happened at Mount Sinai, where a retired nurse practitioner told union leaders an ICU patient died because of reduced care. The New York Post reports that patient, who was on a machine to keep their blood circulating, "was not restrained and sedated properly."        Rock legend Bruce Springsteen says the Trump administration's immigration crackdown is using Gestapo tactics against fellow Americans. He added that the country's ideals and values are being tested as never before. At a weekend performance in New Jersey, he dedicated his a song to Renee Good, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this month.        The NFL announced Sunday that Green Day will kick off Super Bowl 60's opening ceremony. The NFL said the band will open festivities by ushering generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field with a dynamic performance of their most iconic rock anthems. The Super Bowl 60 opening ceremony will air live on NBC.
