Message from Town Administrator

Gary Ezovski

I try to make every message inserted here meaningful and timely. This week, the message could simply be about Thanksgiving and family which is where most minds will and should be. I want to mention a few things that we have done as a town which I think should add to our spirit as we enter the holiday season.

I had the opportunity to tour the ongoing construction of the science labs in the high school yesterday, and I found it so exciting to see the shape and feel that those rooms are becoming. I am anxious to see teachers and students using those spaces. Obviously, I have also had the opportunity to see the addition to NSES that was completed in August that is another great investment we have made as a community for the benefit of our students whose schools have all recently been recognized as four-star performers.  Add to that what I have seen over at 83 Green Street where our new town hall is taking longer than expected but still looking like a facility which will bring a refreshing change from the 100-year-old enchanting but outdated building we currently work in. Two more of our roads are being improved as these letters are being typed, and yes, Rhodes Ave should be done next week. Our town planner and assistant planner have recently received state approval for the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and our separate Hazard Mitigation Plan (no small feat for our small staff, thanks Tom and Bobbi). We also should be receiving our audit soon that will affirm a respectful budget surplus for the 2019 fiscal year, and we continue to move forward with great work on asset management and see steady improvement in multiple financial metrics.

North Smithfield has had much to be thankful for over decades. This year is no different! We certainly aren’t perfect, but we continue to move our town forward. I am grateful for all the work that so many elected officials, staff, volunteers, service providers, consultants and contractors have provided to make each of these initiatives part of the value we create together in North Smithfield. May we all enjoy time and nourishment with family next week. May we also relish the collective good fortune of our town as we start this holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In observance of Thanksgiving next week, Town Hall Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 28th, and Friday, November 29th. We will be open our usual hours of 8 AM - 4 PM on Monday - Wednesday.

Trash, recycling and yard waste will not be collected on Thursday and will be postponed by one day the rest of the week.

Curbside yard waste has started and will continue through

December 6th, but drop-off hours have changed.

Yard waste is collected on the same day as your trash and recycling.  Residents can have a reasonable amount of leaf bags or cans, clearly marked, of yard waste out at the curb for weekly collection. The fall collection season runs from Monday, October 7th - Friday, December 6th, 2019.

Given the time change and little to no activity now on Wednesdays, drop-off hours at our Highway Garage, 281 Quaker Highway will continue Saturdays from 9 am - 3 pm ONLY until April 1, 2020. Residents are welcome to bring yard waste or accepted recyclables. The town offers free drop off for rigid plastic and scrap metal items as well as used motor oil. Please do not leave items outside the gate after business hours; we will take notice.

NORTH SMITHFIELD STUDENTS:

JOIN THE WACHUSETT MOUNTAIN SKI CLUB

Hey North Smithfield! Did you know that North Smithfield students have an awesome opportunity to join a ski club this winter? This program started 4 years ago, and it has been great!. We have filled one coach bus, and there are enough people to start another bus, but we need to fill it. If your child doesn’t ski, don’t worry. You can take lessons and rent equipment. High School and Middle School students can ski without a parent. If you want to bring your Elementary child (5th grade or younger), you can, but you need to come and be at the mountain with them. We go once a week on Mondays from 3pm - 8pm at Wachusett Mountain. Contact Stephen Corriveau for more info. This email address is being protected from spambots. Community Heart Saver CPR/AED Class

The North Smithfield Fire and Rescue Service will be offering an American Heart Association Heart Saver CPR/AED class to North Smithfield residents and business owners.

Upon successful completion of the four hour class, students will be fully trained and certified in Heart Saver CPR and trained on how to operate an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED).

The class will be held at the NSFR Station #2, 1470 Providence Pike, on Wednesday, December 11th, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. The cost of the class is $60 per person. The fee includes the cost of text books and certification cards. The Class must have a minimum of three students and a maximum of ten students.

Please RSVP to Chief David Chartier at 762-1135 no later than 4:00 pm Wednesday, November 27th. Because text books need to be ordered in advance, payment must be received before the order is placed on December 2nd to secure your spot in the class.

NOTE: This class is for lay person CPR/AED instruction. Healthcare provider CPR and CPR re-certification classes may be offered in the future or upon request. Class size parameters will still apply.

North Smithfield Residents Food Pantry

Slatersville Congregational Church

25 Green Street

Slatersville, RI 02876

Many, many thanks to all of you who volunteer your time and talents to make the food pantry successful. We currently feed about 90 families. To keep the work from being overwhelming, we need more volunteers. While the food pantry is only open four times a month, it takes many more hours of volunteer work to keep it running well.

We currently need volunteers to:

  -  Help with pickup and delivery of donated food. A regular vehicle will do.

  - Help on Wednesday and Friday mornings 9:30-10:15 to sort food, and we need supervisors for those two times.

   - Help when the food pantry is open the last two Tuesdays of the month 5:30 - 7 pm, and the last two Saturdays 10 - 11 am to help with clients and carry bags to clients' cars.

    - Coordinate the food rescue and distribution program, requires 4-5 hours a week.

Are any of these interesting to you? Please contact Rev Eileen at 769-2773.

The flavor of the month for NOVEMBER is

CANNED MEATS

Any donations or monetary gifts for the food pantry can be dropped off at the Slatersville Congregational Church between 9:00 am and noon. You can also mail monetary gifts to P.O. Box 1128, Slatersville, RI 02876. An additional drop box for food items is available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.
